On Wednesday, a thread in the Poker Community forumhere on PocketFives centered on 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event champion Jonathan Duhamel (pictured), a PokerStarspro, being a victim of a nasty home invasion in Montreal, Canada. According to the Canadian Press, “two men forced their way into a Boucherville borough home Wednesday morning. [Police] would not confirm the name of the victim. However, Duhamel’s agent Yves Bouchard says it was his client.”

A spokesperson for Duhamel told the press that the poker player was roughed up, but is now back at home: “Let’s say that getting out of bed will be particularly hard tomorrow and that his Christmas photos won’t be the prettiest. But Jonathan got out without serious injuries.” Duhamel was scheduled to meet with police on Thursday morning to rehash the burglary. It’s not known whether there were any weapons involved or how the robbers assaulted Duhamel.

The assailants went so far as to ring the doorbell of Duhamel’s home and when he answered, they forced their way inside. The same Canadian Press story outlined what happened next: “Although he was roughed up by the robbers, Duhamel was able to call 9-1-1 after they left and police responded moments later. The poker player had to be treated in the hospital for minor injuries, although he has now been released. His mother told the Canadian Press he is doing well.”

Montreal police appear to be continuing their investigation into the crime and it was unclear whether the assailants targeted Duhamel or the incident was simply random. Either way, it has sent shockwaves through the poker community just days before Christmas, as Duhamel has been one of the game’s most visible and successful players as of late.

According to the Montreal Gazette, “A considerable number of 500-Euro bills were among the loot taken” in the robbery, which took place on Wednesday at 9:15am local time. The same news outlet added that the thieves “made off with an undisclosed amount of Canadian currency and two pieces of easily identifiable jewelry for which investigators are also on the lookout.”

The missing trinkets include Duhamel’s championship bracelet (pictured) and a black Rolex Submariner watch. The thieves were described as being “white, with one estimated at 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing 180 pounds.” Anyone with any information about the crime is encouraged to call police.

In mid-2010, Duhamel banked $8.9 million for winning the WSOP Main Event. He trumped a field of 7,319 players in that tournament and edged out American John $JMONEY$ Racener heads-up. Duhamel became the first Canadian Main Event winner ever and is now a sponsored pro of PokerStars, the world’s largest online poker room.

In January 2011, Duhamel won the High Roller event at the European Poker Tour’s stop in Deauville, France and collected $272,000. Although the field was smaller at just 58 players, Duhamel ensured the poker community that he was far from a one-trick pony. Last month, Duhamel finished seventh at the World Poker Tour’s stop in Marrakech and earned another $30,000.

According to the Hendon Mob, Duhamel is 15th on poker’s all-time money list at $9.6 million in live tournament earnings. He is second in Canada behind only Daniel Negreanu ($14.6 million).

In a Poker Community thread, posters on PocketFives reacted to the robbery, which occurred in broad daylight. One member of PocketFives wrote, “That is brutal! Hopefully Duhamel now decides to invest in some security. There are a lot of beasts from Montreal in that line of work.” Another poster strongly believed that Duhamel was targeted: “It said investigators are trying to determine if he was targeted? Are they f’ing kidding me? Of course he was targeted.”
