Marc McLaughlin from Monteal, Canada, went into Day 6 of the 2013 WSOP Main Event in second place with about 6.6 million chips. McLaughlin is no stranger going deep in the Main Event, as 2013 was the third time in the previous five years he had been in the top 100. He ultimately finished in sixth place for $1.6 million.

McLaughlin had almost $700,000 in total live tournament cashes entering the 2013 Main Event. His previous best cash came in the 2011 WSOP in a $1,500 No Limit Hold’em Event, a third place finish for almost $300,000. His 30th place finish in the 2009 WSOP Main Event increased his bankroll by over $250,000.

On Day 5 of the 2013 WSOP, McLaughlin temporarily had the chip lead in a huge pot against Patrick shevmouse Renkers. With the blinds at 12,000/24,000 Renkers raised from the hijack with Q-Q. What looked like a move from McLaughlin, he 3bet from the button with A-A to 139,000. Renkers then 4bet to 345,000 and, in this action-packed hand, McLaughlin 5bet to 660,000. Renkers then tanked and subsequently shoved all-in for 2,580,000 in chips, which McLaughlin snap-called. The board of Th-8c-5s-5h-5d was of no help to Renkers and McLaughlin catapulted to 5.8 million in chips.

Near the end of Day 5, McLaughlin again found himself in a big hand, this time against Jonathan Jaffe. With the blinds at 20,000/40,000 McLaughlin raised under the gun with As-Kh, finding J.C. Tran calling in the hijack. Jaffe attempted to make a move with Tc-9c by 3betting to 240,000 chips from the big blind, which McLaughlin called, and Tran folded.

The flop came Kd-Qs-9h, giving Jaffe bottom pair and a straight draw and McLaughlin top pair. McLaughlin lead out for 250,000 in chips, which Jaffe check-raised to 600,000. Both players checked the turn and river of 4c-Qd, respectively, bringing McLaughlin to almost 6.8 million in chips.
