According to his Twitter feed, Tom Dwan (pictured) had a rough run of cards in the gambling epicenter of Macau, where he apparently lost big. And we’re not just talking any old run-of-the-mill loss. Instead, according to his Twitter feed, Dwan dropped a record amount. On Monday, he Tweeted, “In Taiwan for the 1st time ever… Not leaving the airport tho. Maybe next trip. Had my biggest loss ever yesterday.”

What we do know is that Dwan was in Macau at the time of the record loss. On September 19, he chirped, “Just left chateau marmont [in California] at 10:57 and somehow made my 11:55 flight to china. #sicklife, go cathaypacific and my awesome driver who I just met.” He then posted a picture of his digs in Macau and mentioned his losses a few days later.

How much did he lose? CardPlayer speculated, “Dwan didn’t give any indication of a figure, but his loss would have had to been greater than $2 million for his statement to be true. In 2009, when Viktor ‘Isildur1’ Blom was rising in the poker world, Dwan lost around $2 million in a single session to him… It’s also easy to imagine his ‘biggest loss ever’ was much, much larger than $2 million because there have been reports of pots worth around $3.8 million unfolding in Macau.”

Dwan has experienced plenty of variance online, according to HighStakesDB, although the games in Macau are presumed to be offline. HighStakesDB started tracking Dwan in late 2006 and, by the first month of 2009, his earnings had grown to nearly $6 million online. However, one year later, that entire sum was erased and Dwan was actually a lifetime loser at the virtual tables.

By mid-2010, Dwan had rebounded in a big way, jumping above $7 million in earnings, according to HighStakesDB and, after Black Friday, he sat at around $2.4 million in the black. Currently, he is around the same amount. Graph is courtesy of HighStakesDB.

Also in news surrounding Dwan, the so-called Durrrr Challenge against Dan “jungleman” Cates could come to a head in the near future in terms of a resolution. A variety of side bets exist and, according to PokerListings, Cates has a $1 million lead on Dwan after 20,000 hands have been completed out of 50,000. The match originally began three years ago, but was interrupted by Black Friday. We’ll keep you posted.
