The 2015 World Series of Poker Main Event kicked off yesterday with 741 players ponying up the $10,000 buy-in for the first of three opening days. The field size is slightly down from last year’s first opening day which witnessed a starting field of 771 players.

Florida’s William Kakon had the honor of ending the day on top of the 480 players surviving Day 1A as the chipleader with 152,325 chips. Closely on his tail is Michigan’s Gjergj Sinishtaj sitting in second place with 149,100 chips, and California’s Alex Tran with 142,700 chips.

Kakon has a reason to be excited, as last year Martin Jacobsonparlayed a Day 1A chip lead in the Main Event into eventually winning the event.

Some notable PocketFivers also in the hunt heading into Day Two are David Davidp18 Peters(pictured – 52,900 chips), Ryan ryanghall Hall(52,575 chips), Jon pokertrip Friedberg(46,625 chips), and Rob rtinnion Tinnion (45,000 chips).

Hall seemed pleased with his performance in Day 1A, Tweeting to his followers, “52,575 to end day 1. Back for day 2 on Wednesday at noon at 250/500. Happy with my stack.”

Friedberg (pictured) also seemed content with where he stands after not hitting the felts in some time when telling his almost 4,000 Twitter followers, “Advanced to Day 2 of WSOP Main Event with 46,625. Play continues on Wed at 12p.”

Tinnion on the other hand could have been happier heading into Day Two. He first ran his stack up to 72,000 chips by dinner break according to his Twitter posts, and ended the day on a bad beat where his pocket aces were cracked by pocket nines. “45k for day 2, lost 80k pot AA<99 20mins before end of day :/ ," Tinnion Tweeted. Another PocketFiver navigating through the first opening day is Tournament Poker Edgeinstructor Marc marcalioto Aliotowho was in a dramatic back and forth hand against Josh Arieh near the end of the day.

WSOP.com reported that with the blinds at 200/400, Arieh raised under the gun to 900 chips with Tc Th, which Alioto 3-bet in middle position to 2,300 chips with Ac Kh. The action folded back around to Arieh who shoved all-in for about 13,500 chips. Alioto snap calls while committing a good portion of his stack. The flop came Ad Kd Td, giving Arieh bottom set and Alioto top two pair. The 4h appeared on the turn, which gave Arieh a temporary sigh of relief. However, fortunately for Alioto, a Ah came on the river giving him a aces over kings full house, and sending Arieh to the showers.

Alioto seems content with the way things ended, telling his over 8,000 Twitter followers, “Bagged 31k and I couldn’t be more proud of myself for not punting #tpedge”

The second and third opening days for the WSOP Main Event are scheduled to start Monday and Tuesday at 12:00 PST.
