15 Bigs: Erik Seidel – The WSOP and Hall of Famer Legend Takes on Our Poker Posers

Poker players don’t come any more experienced that Erik Seidel. The 65-year-old New Yorker, who has won 10 World Series of Poker bracelets in a glittering career that has spanned almost 40 years, is perhaps poker’s greatest journeyman. Sitting comfortably among the top players ever on The Hendon Mob’s All-Time Money List, Seidel took time away from the WSOP felt to take on our 15 Bigs questions.

The Sopranos or White Lotus.
If you were stranded on a desert island with one book for company, what would it be?
I think I’d have to pick a big short story collection.
What’s the song you could listen to on repeat forever?
Sufjan Stevens – Impossible Soul, because its 25 minutes long.
What’s your favourite place to play poker and why?
We’ve been blessed to play in so many cool locations. I think Vietnam was my favorite, a place I had never been before. Great food and its beautiful.
If you were to be shot at dawn, what would be your last meal and drink?
Shrimp creole and a glass of red wine.

Where’s your favourite non-poker holiday destination?
I had an incredible family vacation in The Galapagos Islands. Martha’s Vineyard is another favorite.
You can play poker every day for a year or play no poker for a whole 12 months – which do you choose?
Play every day, I can always quit early.
Who is the person you don’t have around anymore that you miss the most?
Both of my parents.
Which person would you most like to meet but never have?
Barrack Obama. Such a brilliant guy and I like that he’s so connected to the culture. He keeps current on music, film and book. Also, he plays poker – love that.

When’s the last time life put you on tilt?
There are lots of reasons to tilt every day, I try to accept what comes.
If you couldn’t play the WSOP Main Event next year, which family member would you put into the action in your place?
My youngest daughter likes to play.
What’s your best poker skill?
I’d like to think its adaptability.

And your biggest leak?
Rushing through thinking.
If you could make one rule change to poker, what would it be?
Ban players who act like jerks.
