PGT PLO Series Ends with Double Delight for Jonas Kronwitter
PGT PLO Series Ends with Double Delight for Jonas Kronwitter

Austrian player Jonas Kronwitter won his second event of the PGT PLO Series to grab the title in Las Vegas as the PokerGO Tour’s latest series ended with drama at the felt. The eight-event series, which awarded eight titles to just six players after Sam Soverel also claimed two wins in Sin City across the week’s action.

Event #7 Proves Key for Kronwitter

The penultimate event of the PGT PLO Series saw Jonas Kronwitter claim his second win of the series, effectively sealing a series victory in Las Vegas. Costing $15,700 to play, the Pot Limit Omaha event had a total field of 65 entries, with 10 players reaching the money. Both Ted Lawson (10th) and Brevin Andreadis (9th) won $29,250 after sneaking into the money place, with Jiyang Gan cashed for $39,000 in eighth.

Once players arrived at the final table, Nick Palma finished in seventh place, winning $39,000 when his pair of kings were unable to hold against the Finnish player Joni Jouhkimainen’s A-K-6-5 that contained two hearts and flopped the nut flush. No running cards came to save Palma and he was soon followed from the felt by the Dutch player Nino Pansier, who cashed for $53,625 in sixth place.

The Spanish PLO specialist and PokerGO Tour event winner Lautaro Guerra lost out in fifth for $73,125 before American pro Matthew Wantman took $97,500 in fourth place. His compatriot Jeremy Druckman was next to go, as he bowed out just short of the final duel for a score of $131,625, leaving Kronwitter marginally ahead of Joni Jouhkimainen as the two men battled for the title. After the pair of queens in his hand were matched by two more on the board, the Austrian’s quad queens gave him a landmark victory and in doing so, also gave him what turned out to be an unassailable leaderboard advantage despite no deep run in Event #8.

Who Won the PLO Championship Event #8?

The final event of the PGT PLO Series saw a $26,000 buy-in, and the biggest entry fee of the series. A total of 48 entries made up the field and just a dozen of them made the Day 2 seat draw. While 12 made the last day, only seven made the money meaning the bubble came directly before the final table too.

The Canadian player and sometime PokerStake seller Alex Livingston was the man who missed out on making some money, running into the Italian player Youness Barakat’s trips to burst the bubble and send the seven remaining players heading to the final table. Once there, Americans Brevin Andreadis (7th for $48,000) and Sean Rafael (6th for $72,000) were followed out of the door by Barakat, who departed in fifth place for  $96,000 when he lost out to a set of sevens belonging to Cesar Garcia, as the Spanish player gained momentum at exactly the right time.

Garcia’s fellow countryman Lautaro Guerra was the next player to depart, as his run ended in fourth place for $126,000. All in against the set of eights belonging to British mixed game specialist Robert Cowen, Guerra’s fellow Spaniard strengthened his chances of victory by taking out Matthew Wantman in third place for $174,000.

Heads-up, Cowen had a slim lead, but it soon evaporated, as the Welshman lost a chunk of his chips to Garcia’s set of aces. Cowen actually made a good fold, but it landed him a deficit of 8:1 to make up. He was unable to do so, as a queen-high straight was behind Garcia’s king-high straight, and the Spanish player took the title and $420,000 top prize, the biggest of the series right at the death.
